Advertisement Analysis Slicing The Prices - 1237 Words

Slicing the Prices In a recent issue of Men’s health magazine, Gillette has posted an appealing advertisement. The advertisement Gillette has posted is for their price change in razors. The advertisement is a straightforward design with three razors on the left-hand side of the page, large text saying, â€Å"Get the shave you love for our lowest prices in years† on the top, and finally the company name on the right. The advertisement does not give a specific price. The promises of an insubstantial value in addition to the light humor makes this an effective advertisement that will remain in the subconscious of future consumers. As most readers of a magazine normally disregard the advertisements displayed, companies must find ways to convey†¦show more content†¦After reading the bottom paragraph, the advertisement communicates â€Å"we’d prefer to tell you exactly how much† meaning Gillette could not provide the value of the product as the prices a re dependent on location and market. Troubled Retail Food Group faces †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Troubled Retail Food Group faces. Answer: Introduction: Retail Food Group, or RFG, is a global food and beverage company, having its headquarters in Australia. It is the largest multiband retail food franchise in the nation, along with being a roaster and a supplier of high quality coffee products. The company is also coming out as a leader in the wholesale bakery sectors, foodservices and dairy processing (RFG, 2018). Even with so much working in its favour, RFB has been in the headlines in the recent times, particularly regarding the potential class actions by the different parties. This report focused on what these issues had been and the major developments in this context. Once this is done, the report would shed light on the regulatory authority which might be involved in the possible investigation. And lastly, before concluding, the possible remedies in such situation would be discussed. RFG is present a troubled franchisor, which is facing possible class action owing to the accusations regarding the group misleading its investors regarding the manner in which the business model of RFG would affect the store owners. Investigations have already been started against the Donut King and Gloria Jeans chains by Maurice Blackburn in a clash action on shareholders behalf. There is another class action being investigated by Bannister, a law firm (Rask Media, 2018). All this happened in the light of the shares of RFG tumbling once the revelation regarding a secret deal being made by Fairfax Media with a former executive for managing stores came out. The troubled owners of Donut King and Gloria Jeans chains failed to inform their shareholders that the business was being done with a private company, which was being run by former executive, who also had been the partner of long standing boss of the company. This deal came to light in context of RFG and Exit 57 Investments of Alic ia Atkinson after the collapse of private company collapsed (Danckert, 2018a). It was stated by Ben Slade, the Maurice Blackburn principal that the class action investigation would be for the shareholders who had purchased shares back in June 2015 to this years February on the allegations of breaching the continuous disclosures (Pash, 2018). The shares of RFG fell badly on consecutive days due to this possible class action looming in the future of the company. The crux of this matter was the deal between Atkinson and RFG, which fell through, resulting in company getting a $2.8 million tax debt and stated that RFG subsidiary owed $1.6 million. The deal between Exit 57 and RFG was such that the former had to temporarily manage the stores, which included the ones abandoned by RFG. This deal took place in 2014 and was ended in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, Alford stepped down from the position of managing director, but he continued to be a director of company till July 2017, after which he left the company. All this had been valid and of no problem, if the requisite disc losures had been made. But the annual reports of last five years of RFG made no mention of Exit 57 and the arrangement had not been listed in the related party dealings of the company. The company failed in taking the reporting obligations in serious manner, even when it is an ASX listed company (Danckert, 2018b). The issue in this case majorly revolves around the potential breach of Regulatory Guide 76, which is related to related party transactions. Every listed company on Australian Stock Exchange is required to follow RG 76, in addition to the provisions which had been laid down in the Corporations Act, 2001. Based on this, there is a need to disclose the transactions which take place with the related party, and to take necessary permission before such transactions are entered into. Section 208 of the Corporations Act, 2001 provide that an entity controlled by public company, or a public company in itself is required to give the financial benefit to the public companys financial benefit. This requires members of the company to approve transactions as have been covered under section 217-227; unless the financial benefit falls in exceptions covered under sections 210-216. There are also statutory duties imposed on directors of the companies through sections 180-184 of this act, and the commo n law duties, regarding it being a duty of the directors of the company to take approval and to disclose of such matters (ASIC, 2011). Regulatory Authority In the event where the aforementioned sections and regulations are not complied with by any organization, a case can be raised against the directors and the company for the breach of pertinent sections to the ASIC, i.e. Australian Securities and Investments Commission. So, the potential class action can be initially brought to the ASIC as it is the regulatory body which looks into the breaches of Corporations Act, and also that of the breaches of the regulatory guides which the ASX listed companies have to follow (ASIC, 2011). Upon a case being raised before the ASIC, a fully fledged investigation would be launched into the affairs of RFG. Apart from this, the role of different directors, particularly the former executive who also had been the partner of long standing boss of the company, would be under investigation. This would be in particular reference to the breach of director duties. The reason for a breach of director duties being investigated upon in this case against RFG stems from the fact that the Corporations Act bestows important duties which the directors have to abide by. These include the civil obligation of duty of care and diligence under section 180; good faith under section 181; use of position under section 182; use of information under section 183; and criminal offence for breach of good faith, and use of position and information under section 184 (Cassidy, 2006). Where the significant matters like related party transactions are not disclosed in a proper manner by the directors of the company, before the shareholders, and the requisite permission is not taken from the shareholders, it shows that the directors had not worked in a diligent and careful manner. This also shows that the lack of good faith being deployed, and the misuse of both position and information of company. The severity of this matter would also attract the criminal penalties, in addition to the civil penalties (Paolini, 2014). Apart from the directors duties, the provisions covered under section 208 were also beached by RFG as they did not take the relevant approval from the members in accordance with section 230 of this act (Federal Register of Legislation, 2018). Apart from the legislative requirements, the regulatory guide was also contravened, giving ASIC the full chance of raising claims against RFG for breaching the regulatory requirements in terms of Corporations Act and ASX Listing Rules (ASIC, 2011). Possible remedies Whenever a claim is made against the company or the directors in context of the aforementioned provisions, there are certain defences which the parties can claim, to safeguard against possible liabilities attached with these claims. RFG too is ready to defend this class action vigorously (RFG, 2018b). For instance, the directors can make use of the business judgement rule given under section 180(2) of the Corporations Act (CCH Australia, 2011). By using this section, the directors can show that they undertook the business decision after carefully analysing the situation based on their skill level and based on the information provided by others, which they analysed on the basis of their knowledge. However, due to the magnitude of case being prepared against RFG in terms of class action, there is high chance of such defence failing. This is because the ASIC would make an application for the class action applicants to get adequate compensation as a remedy for the different breached by the RFG and its directors. This would enable the shareholders in recovering their lost money, when the shares of the group fell down. Also, as remedy, the guilty directors could be disqualified for breaching their director duties, and barred from holding directorship positions for certain time. So, the order passed by the ASIC would have to be confirmed by the court, before the remedies actually come in the hands of the class action applications. Conclusion Thus, from the analysis of the present storm being faced by RFG, it can be concluded that the position of the company is not strong enough. It is most likely to face the brunt of the actions undertaken by its management, where the shareholders were duped. Not only were their rights snapped away, but they also had to bear loss in terms of tumbling stock prices, all because the management failed in disclosing the related party transactions. As a result of this instance, different regulatory and legislative compliances were not undertaken, resulting in the ASIC getting the power of investigating on the claimed upon breaches. Where this investigation reveals that the company and its directors had been guilty of such contraventions, the class action would provide the applicants with remedies, as decided upon by the court. William Wordsworth The Poet of Childhood free essay sample

An assessment of William Wordsworths We are Seven and Lucy Gray to express and savor the innocent pleasures that he, as an adult, is incapable of achieving using direct quotes from both works. Wordsworths literary children comment on challenging issues such as faith versus denial; feeling versus thinking; and healthful solitude versus unhealthful isolation. In addition, they express Wordsworths love of nature. They also allow Wordsworth to explore his own unsatisfying childhood and express the lost, forgotten, and stuck parts of himself as a young boy. Author G. Kim Blanks suggests that it is no coincidence that much of Wordsworths poetry deals, in one way or another, with a child coming face to face with death. Like an old vinyl record with the needle stuck in a scratched place, Wordsworth uses his literary children to try to make sense of the painful events in his own life: Wordsworths problem was that he was locked into childhood by unresolved feelings and events that he experienced before adolescence. The 37 Cheapest Colleges in the US

The 37 Cheapest Colleges in the US SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Because wages seem to be remaining stagnant and college costs continue to soar, financial concerns are weighing more heavily on families when students make their college decisions. Additionally, student loan debt is increasing and young people are worried about being saddled with astronomical debt when they graduate. In this article, I'm going to provide you with the list of the 37 cheapest colleges in the United States.I’ll also explain the costs of various colleges and discuss how finances should influence your college selection process. Average College Costs In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reports that a "moderate" college budget for an in-state public college for the 2014–2015 academic year averaged $23,410. A moderate budget at a private college averaged $46,272. Total cost combines the following: Tuition and Fees Many colleges report a combined tuition and fees figure. Colleges often charge mandatory fees for services like the library, transportation, athletic facilities, and student activities. The average cost of tuition and fees for the 2014–2015 school year was $31,231 at private colleges, $9,139 for state residents at public colleges, and $22,958 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. Housing and Meals The average cost of room and board in 2014–2015 ranged from $9,804 at four-year public schools to $11,188 at private schools. However, the cost of "room and board" varies depending on the campus housing and food plan you choose. Colleges also provide room and board estimates for living off campus based on typical student costs. Books and School Supplies Most colleges estimate the average costs for required learning materials. Some colleges even include the cost of a computer and computer accessories. The average cost for books and supplies for the 2014–2015 school year was $1,146 at public colleges and $1,244 at private colleges. Personal and Transportation Expenses Colleges may estimate some expenses they don't bill you for. These include local transportation, clothing, personal items and entertainment. Expenses in this category for 2014–2015 ran from $2,609 at private colleges to $3,242 at public universities. What Do Cheap Colleges Cost and Why Do They Cost Less? The average annual cost of colleges on this list is $6,077. Most are so much cheaper in part because they're public institutions subsidized by state and city governments. However, there are a couple of private colleges on the list that have made it part of their missions to offer low-cost education. For example, Berea College in Kentucky is tuition-free. All students at Berea enter into a labor program to finance their education. How to Use This List If cost is an important factor in your college decision, you can use this list to identify possible colleges of interest. Research them to see if they fit your other criteria for what you're looking for in a college. Also, you'll get a better idea of the price range of the cheapest colleges in the United States. The 37 Cheapest Colleges in the United States The schools are ranked by net price. These net prices, which come from College Navigator (a component of the National Center for Education Statistics), are generated by subtracting the average amount of federal, state/local government, or institutional grant or scholarship aid from the total cost of attendance. Total cost of attendance is the sum of published tuition and required fees (lower of in-district or in-state), books and supplies, and the weighted average for room and board and other expenses The list gives you a general expectation of the total annual cost of attendance. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to consider cost when considering a college, and college would be affordable for everyone. Unfortunately, cost can be a significant factor. When applying, apply to at least one or two more â€Å"affordable† safety school options if cost is a concern for you and your family. Keep in mind that you don’t know how much you’re going to have to pay to attend a certain school before you apply. Don’t let the sticker price prevent you from applying. Most financial aid and scholarships are awarded after you’re accepted but before you commit to a college. Furthermore, many of the most selective colleges claim to meet 100% of a student’s financial need through a combination of school, state, and federal aid. Your Expected Family Contribution, or EFC, is determined from your FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. After you're accepted to a school, you'll receive your financial aid package. At that point, you can determine out-of-pocket expenses and how much you would have to take out in loans. Then, it's wise to consider finances in your decision. Weigh the financial burden of attending with the quality of education, how much you want to attend, and the expected financial return of attending a certain school. Compare your options. It's up to you to determine how much debt is "worth it." Keep in mind that success after college is more dependent on you than on the college you attend. You can attain all of your professional goals regardless of where you go to school. However, it is undeniable that attending a better college that may be more expensive can offer you certain advantages and privileges while you're in college and beyond. More Affordable College Options Other than the schools on the list, here are some tips if you're looking for more affordable college options. Generally, public schools are cheaper, especially for in-state residents. Remember that the sticker price of public schools is cheaper, but some private schools give generous financial aid; therefore, it's possible that a private college could be the cheaper option for you after you get your financial aid packages. Also, there are tuition-free colleges. Many tuition-free colleges are intended for low-income students and some have a work requirement. What's Next? If you're a low-income student, you'll want to read this article about the Pell Grant to help you pay for college. Using Gustar in Spanish to Say You Like Something

Using Gustar in Spanish to Say You Like Something If you like something, it pleases you. The truth of that statement is obvious, but it nevertheless is important to know when expressing the thought of liking something when speaking Spanish. For in Spanish, the verb usually used when translating to like, gustar, doesnt mean to like at all. It more accurately means to please. Note the construction of the following sentences: English: I like the book. Spanish: Me gusta el libro. Literal word-for-word translation: Me (to me) - gusta (is pleasing) - el (the) - libro (book) Thus we can see that in English the subject of the sentence is the person doing the liking, while in Spanish the subject is the item being liked, and vice versa. Verbs that operate in the same way as gustar are sometimes known as defective verbs, or verbos defectivos, but that term also has other meanings, so it isnt used often. When used in this way, such verbs require an indirect object pronoun. The indirect object pronouns are me (to me), te (to you singular familiar), le (to him or her), nos (to us), os (to you, plural familiar, seldom used) and les (to them). Because the object being liked is the subject of the sentence, the verb must match it in number: Me gusta el libro. I like the book. (The book pleases me.) Me gustan los libros. I like the books. (The books please me.) Les gusta el libro. They like the book. (The book pleases them.) Les gustan los libros. They like the books. (The books please them.) The subject of such sentences does not need to be stated if it is understood: No me gusta. I dont like it. (It doesnt please me.)  ¿No te gusta? Dont you like it? (Doesnt it please you?) A prepositional phrase beginning with a can be added to the sentence for either clarification or emphasis, further indicating who is being pleased. Even when the prepositional phrase is used, gustar still needs the indirect object pronoun: A Kristi le gustà ³ la pelà cula. Kristi liked the film. (A Kristi was added for clarification.) Me gustà ³ la pelà cula. I liked the film. (No emphasis added.) A mà me gustà ³ la pelà cula. I liked the film. (Emphasis added to I.) The subject of such sentences, the object being liked, can be an infinitive: Me gusta nadar. I like to swim. A Pedro le gustaba bailar. Pedro used to like to dance. Note that when there is more than one infinitive, the singular form of gustar is still used. Me gusta beber y comer. I like to eat and drink. You can also use a phrase as the subject, often beginning with que or como. In such cases, a singular form of gustar is used. Me gusta que los chicos respeten y adoren lo que tienen en su paà s. I like that the children respect and adore what they have in their country. A à ©l le gusta como bailas. He likes how you dance.

Acctg discussion Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Acctg discussion - Case Study Example The ethical issue for Jim is whether the increase that he is calling for is due to a specific and truly justifiable reason(s). Secondly there is the issue that this budget is used in the allocation of bonuses and capital improvements. His calling for the increase in the budget may be so as to unfairly place him at a position to get more money for these two items. This is despite the fact that he might not be rightfully entitled to them. The two factors together bring with them an ethical dilemma seeing that he stands to profit personally by the higher bonuses that would be paid to him by headquarters. Also that he would have a larger budget according him the increased option of taking on additional risk, which may not be possible with the original budget The first point of consideration is if these numbers have been inflated for the wrong reasons. Discovery of this by headquarters may lead to him losing his job. Secondly the headquarters may instigate investigations into the hotel’s books for the period during his tenure to make a determination as to how long this has been going on. This is so as to ensure that all the previous budget numbers were above board. There is also the possibility of budget cuts and allocations from headquarters that may actually affect the hotels operation for the coming year. If these figures are actually justifiable on the other hand, there may be increased scrutiny of the hotel just to ensure that the budgeted items are accounted for in the new financial year. If this directive came from the bank manager then Jim has two options. On the one end being the controller he has the ability to counter check the managers directives so as to make a determination of whether these are true claims or not. Secondly he may engage with the manager to discuss the basic ethical concerns that the issue raises

Advertising Is Harmful Essay Example for Free

Advertising Is Harmful Essay Today I went to the bathroom in Tyson’s mall, and I saw a Lenovo camera advertisement stuck in front of the stool. It made me feels like a camera recorded everything in the bathroom. No matter where you go, walking on the street, taking the bus or subway, looking for websites or watching TV shows you always see advertisements. So I believe advertisements are harmful. Some people say that advertisements won’t brainwash them, because they know what they really want. I don’t agree with this, because advertisements affect our subconscious mind. For instance, I have read a newspaper article about a mother who came home and asked her child what he wanted to eat and her child said McDonalds. The mother asked him why McDonalds and the kid said because he always saw it on the TV so he wants to try it. See more:Â  Social Satire in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay Although a child didn’t really know how McDonald food tastes, McDonalds had been advertised so many times on the TV that the children make the decision to have it for dinner. Not only are kids influenced by advertisements, but adults also are. For example, I bought a Dell laptop last year, but returned it a week later. I saw the Dell advertisements everywhere, at the college, the website, and even walking on the street, so when I wanted to buy a laptop, Dell became my first choice. I returned it a week later, because my friend told me Lenovo laptop has the same configuration as the Dell laptop but the price was much cheaper. This example demonstrates how the advertisement induces people to buy products. When people have seen advertisements many times, they have good impressions of the product in their minds. So not was only I had been influenced by advertisements, but most people are also. For example, most people bought IPhones rather than other phones because IPhones adverti sements around everywhere. Often an advertisement not only disturbs our daily lives, but also provides untrue information. Companies always show perfect products in their advertisements, but the real products are much worse. For example, last month I went to Burger King, and I saw a big poster outside the store that showed a man held a hamburger with two hands and open his mouth as big as he can to eat a hamburger. However, he only bites little of the hamburger, because it was too big. And it only cost 99 cents! When I bought it, I felt I had been cheated. It was delicious, but it was smaller than my hand and can be finish within a bite. Also most of the reducing weight advertisements are untrue too. Some companies exaggerated their products in the advertisement to misleading people to buy the products. Some of the advertisements said the medicines could help people reduce around 5 to 20 pounds per month. As we all know, obesity is one of the most serious problems in America, so many people tried to reduce their weight in many ways. However, the result is not as the advertisements showed. Those drugs helped people reduce the weight but also had side effects. For instance, drugs harm people’ health by increasing the risk of diseases, and people would also rebound a weight heavily after they stopped the drug. While not all advertisements are untrue, some advertisements provide exaggerated information that let us waste money and also harm our health. We waste our money to buy advertised products we don’t need. An advertisement may make us feel lower class than other because not having the newest product. For example, The Apple Company has most successful advertisement campaign, because most of people would like to buy their new products. For example, the IPhone5 commercial shows IPhone5 is tallest, thinnest and lightest iPhone. Many people changed Iphone4S to the IPhone5 because the commercial shows IPhone5 is better. However, it has similar systems and the same function as Iphone4S. Another reason people buy the IPhone5 is they had low self- esteem. Like my friend who bought IPhone4S last winter and bought IPhone5 now. And he told me, when there has a better product then he wouldn’t use worse one, because that makes him feel he was lower class than others. In this case, people wasted money to buy the newest advertised products to satisfy their vanity. There are too many advertisements in our world now, because companies try to increasing the sales. However advertisements always mislead people to waste money. Government must provide a law to stop untrue and exaggerated advertisements. And parents also need to take time to explain to their child that some products they saw in commercial are harmful. For example, when child asked to buy a quick food or candies, parents must explain to them those foods are unhealthy.

Early Colonial Areas :: essays research papers

Early colonial areas Long before America officially became a country in 1776, this land, which we are upon, was mearly a colonial settlement for British Immigrants who were fleeing their country because of religious reasons. There were three different areas in which the immigrants settled.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first area was known as New England. It consisted of the present-day states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The people living there were called â€Å"Puritans†. They got their name from trying to purify the church of England. They were very much into religion. They always read the Bible, they believed God’s laws can be understood only through it. They adhered to strict code of morality and proper behavior, they also valued education. For livelihood they traded, fished and built ships. The Pilgrims were the first to settle in Plymouth. Later, non-separatist Puritans came to Massachusetts Bay.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Another area was known as the Middle colonies. The people who settled here were the Quakers. They, alike the Puritans, were also very religious. They also read the Bible. They also migrated to America for religious reasons, like the Puritans. They valued self government, Manufacturing, and commerce. Their preachers preached violently (in terms of speaking). They both, lived amicably with the Indians and purchased plots of land off them. Quaker city of Philadelphia became the unofficial colonial capitol in 1750. Twenty-six years later the Declaration of Independence was signed here. The Middle colonies consisted of the present-day states: New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Final area was known as the Southern Colonies. The people who settled here were called the Planters. These people were farmers and were devoted to their crops and slavery. This group was completely different from the other two in that, the southern colonies were not into religion at all, they were too busy worrying about their crops. They indeed came to America for the farming game.

Don Quixote de La Mancha

In Miguel de Cervantes' classic novel Don Quixote de la Mancha, a necessary counterpart to Don Quixote's character is found in Sancho Panza. Sancho is Don Quixote's so-called squire and companion through his adventures. The vital contrast between these two characters contributes to the literary success of Cervantes' novel. It is only through the eyes of Sancho that we witness Don Quixote's madness and only through the latter's madness that we evidence Sancho's sanity. Without the presence of these complementary characters, the story of Don Quixote would not exist as it does.Cervantes' masterpiece is known for the eccentric character of Don Quixote and his insane adventures and travels through Spain. The first part of the novel was published in 1605 and the second in 1615. The novel became widely popular and is today considered one of the greatest literary achievements of all time. In Cervantes' novel, Don Quixote becomes entranced with the romances of chivalry by reading books. He se ts out on his own quest for the woman of his affection: Dulcinea. With the help of Sancho Panza, his sidekick, he has many imaginary adventures in which he draws others into his fantasies.Sancho attempts to reveal Quixote's eccentricity and Quixote, in turn reveals Sancho's inability to imagine. A prime example of this contrast in perception is evident from the moment Sancho and Don Quixote meet. Sancho is but a peasant when Don Quixote enlists his help. â€Å"[Don Quixote] used so many arguments, an made so many promises, that the poor fellow resolved to sally out with him and serve him in the capacity of a squire† (Cervantes, 32). Don Quixote convinces Sancho of his nobility and Sancho, initially realizing the insanity of Quixote's claims, lays doubt to his proclamations.Sancho is â€Å"shallow-brained† but still must be persuaded by Don Quixote before leaving with him (32). In Sebastian Juan Arbo's biographical study of Cervantes, he provides insight into this contr ast: â€Å"Each defends the other, but Sancho defends the reality of life, and Don Quixote the reality for his dreams without which he cannot live† (250). The sharp distinction becomes clear in adventures that the two partake in. In one episode, Don Quixote decides to free galley-slaves who are being held against their will. Sancho dictates very clearly to Quixote that they are erving a punishment mandated by the king himself, but Quixote will hear nothing of it. He decides he will oppose â€Å"force† and â€Å"defeat violence† as though he is running a campaign of self-promotion. Ignoring Sancho's warnings is something Don Quixote consistently fulfills. Aubrey F. G. Bell in her biography Cervantes, tells us likewise, Sancho is, despite his â€Å"skeptical credulity and his hesitation in action, his character is as consistent as that of his master† (199). In the end, Sancho must watch the slaves escape to present themselves to the Lady Dulcinea per Don Qu ixote's request. In this particular case, Quixote's fantasy wins out over reality, but such is not always the case. The adventure of the windmills is the most prominently featured example of Don Quixote's episodic adventures. In this particular event, Don Quixote claims that windmills are giants that are on the plains. A very honest Sancho tells his master that they are not giants but windmills. After Quixote is knocked down by a windmill sail, Sancho says: â€Å"did not I warn you to have care of what you did, for that they were nothing but windmills? (Cervantes, 36) Quixote, now seeing the truth, claims that an evil sage has turned the giants into windmills to deprive the knight of his glory. Though Sancho warns Don Quixote from the beginning, it is almost inevitable that he is caught up in the imagination of his master (Mack, 1526). Another example of reason triumphing over fantasy is when Don Quixote wishes to battle the lions. When they by chance come across the carriage transp orting the lions, Don Quixote wishes to battle them for nothing more than the sake of proving himself.Sancho begs with his master to allow the lions to remain in the cages, but Don Quixote is persistent, claiming he has strength over the beasts (266). Quixote will defeat anything that threatens his love Dulcinea, even at the cost of his own life. Sancho, on the other hand, fully understands the danger of the situation and when the doors to the cages are opened, he flees. This is the way the two characters work together. In Edward Honig's essay, On the Interludes of Cervantes, the counterparts come alive in contrast to the other. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are dramatic: their voices engage each other and depend on each other; they come alive through the irritation of their complementariness, by the mere fact that they are thrown together and must reckon with each other† (154). This is true even to the point that they are nothing without each other. When Don Quixote is on his deathbed, Sancho begs him not to die, but to continue in the adventure and quest that they had joined one another in. Sancho is afraid of what might happen if his master is gone.By the end of Cervantes' novel, the lives of the two characters have become so intertwined it is painful to separate. W. H. Auden is a critic of Cervantes and best expresses the importance of this pairing. Take away Don Quixote, and Sancho Panza is so nearly pure flesh, immediacy of feeling, so nearly without will [†¦ ] Take away Sancho Panza, on the other hand, and Don Quixote is so nearly pure spirit [†¦ ] who rejects matter and feeling and is nothing but an egotistic will (80, 81).In the end, Don Quixote dies a sane man, and Sancho is left with the memories of adventure and nothing more. The character of Sanson, who was also involved in Don Quixote's endeavors, is the first person to legitimately recognize Sancho's stance when he claims â€Å"honest Sancho is very much in the right† (Cerv antes, 443). Quixote, too is satisfied with his ending, proclaiming â€Å"I was mad, I am now sane† on his death bed (443). Quixote ends his life as a sane man, but if he had lived it sane, there would be no story to tell.Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are essential components to the attractive Cervantes novel. Without the two supplementing one another there would be and could be no story. The two characters are forever embedded in one another through literary history. Quixote and Sancho's characteristics never fail to impress, amuse and enlighten. These characters are the devices of Cervantes' literary technique, and the life force of Don Quixote de la Mancha. So I can suggest following, †¢Benchmarking against other rivals for indications as to whether we are â€Å"economic enough†, â€Å"efficient enough† and â€Å"effective enough†. †¢Comparing with other parts of our organization †¢Measuring and interpreting trends over a period of time †¢Aiming to continuous improvement So I would suggest following measures to improve above qualities in Subway, †¢Economy Performance Measures: Maintaining a cost per unit Comparing the actual cost input with planned input †¢Efficiency Performance Measures: Minimising the waste Make sure staffs well trained Equipment must be up to date †¢Effective Performance Measures: Storing the right amount of stocks Identifying the best selling meal depending on the location Identifying the target customer group Responding to customer feedbacks LO2.2Explain the tension between cost minimisation and quality maximisation. Cost minimisation aims to achieve the most cost efficient way of delivering goods and services achieve the essential level of quality. Customer is the main root in Tesco Plc, without them they cannot survive in the completive market. While offering good customer services and the good quality products need to have an idea about the cost minimization of the product as well. So in this case I realised major out flow of the company is marketing and branding cost. Therefore I have to identify better marketing and branding technique to drop overall Tesco marketing and branding cost for our products. But marketing is very vital to survive in this competitive market (ex.Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose) Thus have to look any alternation cost to reduce rather than cutting marketing cost. I came with an idea to reduce production cost at controlling, †¢Minimise the extra over time, †¢Minimise unnecessary utility expenses †¢Management ordering –then we can reduce transport cost and increase the sales in an efficient way. †¢Hence some Tesco expresses don’t have their own bake off it will be good move to build their own bake off to control waste, cost and provide high quality products. In the mean time I have given my attention to best customer services throughout our entire retail shops. By  advising all retail managers to look after extra satisfactory stock at any time and maintain all warehouse activities including production ,servicing and manage of chilled foods and grocery items while minimum of wastage and maximising customer satisfaction towards highest profitability margin while in according to control the safety features. To increase the customer services I manage to conduct, †¢Proper training programme to all our staff. †¢Evaluate the retail shops and individual staff by’’ mystery shopper’’ †¢Well experience new staff recruitment, LO2.3 Evaluate the significance of the five performance objectives that underpin operations management Strategy in a business organization is essentially about how the organization seeks to survive and prosper within its environment over the long-term. The decisions and actions taken within its operations have a direct impact on the basis on which an organization is able to do this. The way in which an organization secures, deploys and utilizes its resources will determine the extent to which it can successfully pursue specific performance objectives. Slack et al. (2004) argue that there are five operations strategies: 1 Cost: The ability to produce at low cost. 2 Quality: The ability to produce in accordance with specification and without error. 3 Speed: The ability to do things quickly in response to customer demands and thereby offer short lead times between when a customer orders a product or service and when they receive it. 4 Dependability: The ability to deliver products and services in accordance with promises made to customers (e.g. in a quotation or other published information). 5 Flexibility: The ability to change operations. Flexibility can comprise up to four aspects: †¢The ability to change the volume of production. †¢The ability to change the time taken to produce. †¢The ability to change the mix of different products or services produced. †¢The ability to innovate and introduce new products and services. Operations strategy has a vertical relationship in the corporate hierarchy with business and corporate strategies, and horizontally with the other functional strategies, most notably with marketing strategy. Operations strategy might come about in a top-down or a bottom-up process with regard to business and corporate strategies. Similarly, an operations strategy might be developed in response to market requirements (i.e. market-led) or be based on the capabilities of its operations. Slack et al. (2004: p.67) argue that an operations strategy concerns the pattern of strategic decisions and actions, which set the role, objectives, and activities of operations’. Their use of the term ‘pattern’ implies a consistency in strategic decisions and actions over time. LO3 Understand how to organise a typical production process LO3.1Explain linear programming Linear programming is the process of taking various linear inequalities relating to some situation, and finding the â€Å"best† value obtainable under those conditions. Let X be the number of items produced in Basic and Y be the number of items produced in Deluxe. Let P be the profit from both Basic and Deluxe. Then; 10X+ 15Y= P A maximum units of capital is 100. Then; 100≠¥4X+5Y——————requirement 1 Maximum labour availability is 60 hours Then; 60 ≠¥2X+4Y 30≠¥ X+2Y——————-requirement 2 The number of items of the products should be greater than or equals to zero. Then; Y≠¥0 and X≠¥0 Graphical method is used to solve the problem 3 points are available and the 4th point should be derived from the graph Point (0,15) , (0,0) and (25,0) is available , X=16.7 and Y= 6.7 substituting in P= 10x+15y P=167 + 100.5 =267.5 Therefore the maximum profit = 267.5 LO3.2 Evaluate critical path analysis and network planning Critical path analysis is a step by step technique for process planning. This is series of activities determining the earliest completion of the project and schedule network analysis techniques used to identify the schedule flexibility and the critical path of the project schedule network diagram. The critical path is the longest path (sequence of activities) in a project schedule network diagram. Because it is the longest path, it determines the duration of the project and hence the finish dates of the project given the start date. CPA requires careful planning so projects can run smoothly. Improve efficiency and cash flow, therefore materials can be ordered to arrive only as they are needed. Critical path analysis †¢May be used as part of the decision making process. †¢Enables a firm to plan and monitor operations. †¢Time related – identifies the maximum time for an operation to be completed. †¢Identify potential problems in implementing operation. †¢Identifies where and when resources (including human ones) are needed. The approach is in three parts. †¢Create the network – break the overall task down into discrete activities and then create a logical network showing the relationship between the activities in terms of what follows or precedes what. †¢Calculate the timings – make estimates of the time required for each activity and calculate the total time required for the project and the critical path – the path of activities which must happen to estimate if the project is to be completed on time. †¢Update and monitor progress – this is where critical path analysis is really important in areas such as constructions. Having  formed the network and made the estimates and initial calculations, the progress of the activities can be monitored and the whole network updated as work progresses, to ensure that the project completion is not delayed. Example- The following tasks, estimates and precedence have been agreed in a project. TaskActivityEstimated datesprecedence AWrite project initiation document3- BResearch site one4A CResearch site two2A DDocument requirements – site one6B EDocument requirement – site two5C FDefine non – functional requirements2A GDefine agreed requirements3D,E,F HWrite invitation to tender4G Total days29 So we can prepare a project network for this project. After that we can be able to identify which activities are on the critical path of the project. Observing this path we can be able to infer the estimated elapsed duration of the project. The project network for this project- Critical path = ABDG H = 3 + 4 + 6 + 3 + 4 = 20 days In order to complete to this project take 29 days normally but after applying  critical path can be able to finish this 20 days and we can save 9 days from this. LO3.3 Explain the need for operational planning and control Operational planning and control decisions involve arrangement and control of labour, materials, and capital input to produce the required quantity and quality of production most efficiently. Operational planning and control are based on forecasts of future demand for the output of the system. But even with the best possible forecasting and the most finely tuned operations system, demand cannot always be met with existing system capability in a given time period. †¢Unexpected market trends †¢new product developments †¢competitors’ actions Can throw the forecasts off and problems in the operations system can reduce capacity. At these times, shorter term managerial decisions must be made to allocate system capacity to meet demand.   Long term planning involves factors such as fixed capacity planning and product planning. These decisions will affect the organization in the long run. Medium and short term planning involves variable capacity planning, product forecasting, operations scheduling and inventory management. Operation manger organises the operations functioned be allocating responsibilities and creating structures. To ensure business will run smoothly in the long run following planning and controls have to take in to action âž ¢Routing: _ decides the quality and material type _organizing production control forms _investigating which part of the product need to produced or bought âž ¢Scheduling Preventing unnecessary delays and completing operations successfully and efficiently. _Master scheduling _Manufacture scheduling âž ¢Despatching How the process and operations are done through the route sheets. _Centralised Despatching _De-centralised Despatching âž ¢Follow up and expediting âž ¢Inspection LO4 Be able to apply relevant techniques to the production of an operational plan for a typical business LO4.1 Produce a set of clearly defined operational outcomes Companies achieve operational outcomes by reducing or avoiding costs. We can use SMART tool to define the outcomes †¢Specific: Clear and definite terms describing abilities, knowledge, values, attitudes and performance. †¢Measurable: It is feasible to get the data and data are accurate and reliable so it can be assed in more than one way. †¢Aggressive but Attainable: Has potential to move the organization forward. †¢Results-oriented: Describes what standards are expected from customers. †¢Time-bound: Describes where organization would like to be within a specific time period †¢As the Operations Manager at Curry’s, †¢When a customer orders for any particular product online it will be delivered next day, so as the operational manger if we can improve that same day service. It will enhance the quality of customer service provided by Curry’s. †¢Reviewing all the shifts and rescheduling the staff rota. So we can put more staff in the busy periods so it will help to provide excellent customer service because customers won’t be waiting in the long queues to get served. †¢Customer Returns have a bad effect on the business so as operation manger need to ensure the customer to remain faithful to Curry’s. Discount vouchers, Percentage discounts can be issued to the customer. This will satisfy customers. †¢Some customers experience problems in going through the catalogues. By having trained staffs, it is promising for them  to offer help to the customers who wish to use their assist in deciding which particular product the customers are looking for. †¢As the operation manger, need to compliance with budget and stability in curries. A Brief History of Falun Gong essays

A Brief History of Falun Gong essays The Chinese practice of Falun Gong has a relatively short but already important history. Its specific history is a mere ten years old, however the ideas and practices it is based on have a history that stretch throughout the entire history of the Chinese civilization. The practice of different forms of qigong, the cultivation of qi or the energy that flows throughout the human body and the universe, has been a staple in many different practices of Chinese culture including being the basis for traditional Chinese medicine. In its ten-year history, Falun Gong has garnered millions of practitioners and followers and much attention from many others including the Chinese government, although this attention has been mostly negative. Falun Gong is a form of qigong, an age-old Chinese tradition of meditation and exercise. (Beliefnet 1) Falun Gong is essentially a practice of five sets of movements, including both physical exercise and meditation, believed to heighten the physical, spiritual and moral health of its practitioners. (Beliefnet 1) The exercises of Falun Gong are an effort to rotate the falun, or the spinning body of energy thought to be located in the lower abdomen. (Beliefnet 1) The belief is that the performance of these exercises will stimulate the energy in the falun and in the body in general. It is also believed that this practice absorbs energy from the universe and will release negative elements from the body, which can remedy irregular conditions within the body such as pain, disease and the like. (Beliefnet 1) The Falun Gong practice/movement was founded by Li Hongzhi. In the 1980s, there was a resurgence of interest in qigong in China, with many different sects or forms being developed by numerous masters. (Madsen 244) Until 1992, Li Hongzhi and Falun Gong were members of the Qigong Research Association of China, which grew out of the boom in interest in qigong. (Beliefnet 1) Li Hongzhi withdrew himself and...

Parataxis in Steinbecks Paradox and Dream

Parataxis in Steinbeck's 'Paradox and Dream' Though best known as a novelist (The Grapes of Wrath, 1939), John Steinbeck was also a prolific journalist and social critic. Much of his writing dealt with the plight of the poor in the United States. His stories allow the reader to question what it means to be American especially during hard times like the Great Depression or times of great social upheaval during the Civil Rights Movement. In the essay Paradox and Dream (from his final nonfiction book, America and the Americans), Steinbeck examined the paradoxical values of his fellow citizens. His familiar paratactic style (heavy on coordination, light on dependent clauses) is clearly illustrated here in the opening paragraphs of the essay. From "Paradox and Dream"* (1966) by John Steinbeck 1 One of the generalities most often noted about Americans is that we are a restless, a dissatisfied, a searching people. We bridle and buck under failure, and we go mad with dissatisfaction in the face of success. We spend our time searching for security, and hate it when we get it. For the most part, we are an intemperate people: we eat too much when we can, drink too much, indulge our senses too much. Even in our so-called virtues, we are intemperate: a teetotaler is not content not to drinkhe must stop all the drinking in the world; a vegetarian among us would outlaw the eating of meat. We work too hard, and many die under the strain; and then to make up for that we play with a violence as suicidal. 2 The result is that we seem to be in a state of turmoil all the time, both physically and mentally. We are able to believe that our government is weak, stupid, overbearing, dishonest, and inefficient, and at the same time we are deeply convinced that it is the best government in the world, and we would like to impose it upon everyone else. We speak of the American Way of Life as though it involved the ground rules for the governance of heaven. A man hungry and unemployed through his own stupidity and that of others, a man beaten by a brutal policeman, a woman forced into prostitution by her own laziness, high prices, availability, and despairall bow with reverence toward the American Way of Life, although each one would look puzzled and angry if he were asked to define it. We scramble and scrabble up the stony path toward the pot of gold we have taken to mean security. We trample friends, relatives, and strangers who get in the way of our achieving it, and once we get it we shower i t on psychoanalysts to try to find out why we are unhappy, and finallyif we have enough of the goldwe contribute it back to the nation in the form of foundations and charities. 3 We fight our way in and try to buy our way out. We are alert, curious, hopeful, and we take more drugs designed to make us unaware than any other people. We are self-reliant and at the same time completely dependent. We are aggressive and defenseless. Americans overindulge their children; the children, in turn, are overly dependent on their parents. We are complacent in our possessions, in our houses, in our education; but it is hard to find a man or woman who does not want something better for the next generation. Americans are remarkably kind and hospitable and open with both guests and strangers; and yet they will make a wide circle around the man dying on the pavement. Fortunes are spent getting cats out of trees and dogs out of sewer pipes; but a girl screaming for help in the street draws only slammed doors, closed windows, and silence. *Paradox and Dream first appeared in John Steinbecks America and Americans, published by Viking in 1966.

Food security in Eritrea Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Food security in Eritrea - Essay Example Eritrea is a sovereign state, which has been faced with numerous cases of conflict within itself and with its neighbours, especially Ethiopia, due to border demarcation issues, a factor which has resulted to internal displacement of people. Reports indicate that more than 10000 out of the original 70000 internally displaced persons still live in temporary camps, waiting to be resettled by the government (Tesfa, 2008). Apparently, this has been one of the major factors contributing to food shortages due to the fact that these people have no cultivatable land as the war pushed them out of their homes and as such, they can only depend on aid from well wishers and the government. It is estimated that more than 2 million people are affected by food insecurity, translating to approximately 40% of the total population (Tesfa, 2008). The fight for freedom, which lasted for approximately 30 years, left the country in a state of destruction especially in the agricultural sector. This is due to the fact that most of the lands which could be used for farming are littered with unexploded ordinances, which pose a security hazard to the farmers (Rena, 2007). In this context, any person trying to cultivate in these lands risks the possibility of triggering the explosion of land mines, which were buried during the war, but failed to explode. Tensions that continue to exist between Ethiopia and Eritrea have contributed to more installation of these landmines as a defensive mechanism at the expense of the farming communities (Zwi, 2005). The temporary security zone, which is considered to have been the most productive agricultural land measuring approximately 25km2 remains unutilized as a result of these landmines, which have kept away more than 50000 inhabitants, who were displaced by the war, regardless of the fact that n o more fighting takes place in this area (Zwi, 2005). With these developments, food production is deemed to remain low and as such, more people will continue to be affected by extreme hunger. This is also due to the fact that the government has continued to spend a lot of the already scarce resources to finance and facilitate the war with Ethiopia. For instance, it is estimated that more than 300 000 men and women are serving in the army instead of letting them engage in farming activities (Gebre, 2009). Human resource in the agricultural sector is a crucial necessity since activities such as cultivation, planting, and weeding as well as harvesting among others requires to be done in order to guarantee quality harvest. In Eritrea, this has not been the case as it has been observed that there have been limited human resources hence high labour costs. As earlier stated, poor diplomatic relations between the country and its neighbours, i.e. Ethiopia and Sudan, have led to the closure o f the respective borders. This means that no movement is allowed in and from the country, which has continued to impact the economy negatively. It is true to say that if this was not the case, citizens of these nations would have had a chance to interact economically through trading in imports and exports thereby increasing the amount of foreign exchange as well as revenue collected

Management of information technology Bachelor Essay

Management of information technology Bachelor - Essay Example And the study also mainly analyses the reality behind the privacy issue of the consumer. The study also concentrates on the supporting guidelines and practices in use for sustainable management to prevent the privacy concerns with RFID. RFID enables not only automatic supply chain data collection to improve inventory visibility and reduce stock outs at the retail level, it can also result in reduced need for manual handling, labor cost reductions, greater accuracy of shipments, and other benefits, (arcweb) RFID solutions provide real-time information by automatically detecting product movements throughout the distribution process. RFID technology provides real-time inventory visibility while minimizing the need for manual checks, allowing to: - The key to success in the retail RFID market depends on optimizing hardware, software and middleware roles and providing one-stop complete suites or solutions, which facilitate easy integration across the three domains," Shyam While RFID is reaching retailers across the revenue barrier, the high level of investment allows only the biggest retailers (typically $5 billion and above in revenues) to pilot and roll out the RFID technology in their stores and distribution centers, Shyam. The concepts of Distribution chain and logistics are closely connected in the context of raw materials, manufacturers, transporters, warehouses, retailers, and the customers themselves. The functions include the flow of information, and the transformation and delivery of goods from raw material stage through to the end user (Handfield and Nichols 1999 p. 2; Chopra and Meindl 2001, p. 3). Significant factors that determine the success of a supply chain and distribution outlets include process integration among the suppliers and

Organisation investigation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Organisation investigation - Essay Example A social service is defined as any activity performed by a private or public institution whose objective is to aid disadvantage, distress or vulnerable persons or groups (Britannica, 2007). Social work has different elements involve in its realization depending on the age group the service is attending. A simple age group classification is to divide humans into three groups: minors (under age of 18), adults and elderly (above the age of 60). The elderly is a group with lots of social issues especially those associated with health since the body of humans once they reach advanced usage associated with older age starts to breakdown and deteriorate across all bodily systems. The mind is one of the systems that does not work as sharp as in the past. In the United Kingdom the legal framework for social services does not recognize the mental health issues associated with providing social services to the elderly. The mental health act of 2006 was a great improvement for the social service providers operating in the United Kingdom. The new health bill emphasizes improvements in areas such as patient autonomy, non-discrimination and protection of diversity, respect for caters, child welfare, definition of what constitute mental disorder, reciprocity, therapeutic services and criteria for detention among other improvements (Rcpsych, 2007). The community and health act of 1990 is another important piece of legislation for social services providers in the United Kingdom set up by the NHS. The act came to create guidelines and foster the creation of private health institution since the government was not doing a good job in this area and still has not able to create a public system to supply enough services to cover the demand for social services in the UK (Powell, 2001). The act created internal changes within social place agencies such as the one I work for by forcing

Propaganda Posters WW1

Propaganda Posters WW1 The propaganda posters of World War 1 had several different purposes. One of these purposes was to obtain man power for the battles of the war. Another reason was to obtain money for financing the war. A third reason for the posters was to spark nationalism within the respective countries of which the posters were made. Getting laborers in the shell factories was also a cause for the propaganda posters. A final reason was to justify the reason for why the countries were involved in the war so that the people dont rebel against the war. The people who were probable targets for the posters were men, women, and even children. For example, posters that showed how women were being murdered by the enemy sparked a sense of honor in the hearts of the men and it influenced them to fight for their country to protect it and their women. Some posters targeted childrens parents by saying My dad bought me a bond, did yours? or something equivalent. By targeting these specific groups, the posters made everyone involved in total war. The posters suggested many ways for the people of the countries to be involved in the war. Posters suggested that people buy liberty bonds or military bonds in order to help the country financially. They also called for the men to fight and to go the front. Moreover, people, primarily women, were drawn to the factories so that they can help with the shells of the bombs and sometimes with the guns. People were also urged to provide things such as food and clothing for the soldiers on the fronts. By suggesting these types of things, posters made everyone fight as the posters were suppose to do. I think that the role of the propaganda in World War 1 was to get people directly involved into the war and to get money to finance the war. The propaganda made people feel nationalist about their countries and they wanted to fight and help in the war. Liberty bonds or war bonds were money that were given to the government to finance the war, and at the end of the war, the people would get the money back with interest. These bonds were important because the governments needed money to be able to pay the soldiers and to wage the war on the front. By getting money from the people, the country had enough money to finance its economy and also it was a good investment for the people who invested in the war. A wide range of images is used in the World War 1 posters. One example was Lady Liberty leading the American troops into battle. Another image was the Australian flag which said for the king and the country. This image made Australians feel nationalistic about their country. A third image that was shown was the German gorilla which made people fear the destruction of Germany and therefore they wanted to fight against Germany. A German propaganda poster portrays how Jesus is blessing the German army. Other German posters also show a soldier to make the men want to fight. Finally, an Austrian poster shows how a child is putting in money for the war. This was another way to make men and women buy bonds for the war. Several good symbols were used during the World War 1. A gorilla portraying Germany was used to show how ugly and evil Germany was. Another British symbol showed Germany as a skeleton that is drinking the blood of the fallen soldiers. These images made people want to fight Germany and to end its terror over Europe. Australia used a fallen soldier pointing at the viewer of the poster to make men want to avenge the death or wounding of the soldiers who give their lives on the front. Germany made its people join the war by showing how the army was blessed by Jesus which symbolized that it was destined for greatness. They also used the symbol of a soldier on a horse, with a oval around his head which in Orthodox Christianity in particular that portrays him as a saint. In general, the Germans were so confident that they would win, that they showed how glorious their army supposedly was. All of the symbols were used to make the people of the countries fight their enemies. Allies Posters Similarities Central Powers posters Their messages were short and simple. Said true statements. Portrayed German brutality. Both wanted resources. Both guaranteed wins. Both urged men to enlist in the fighting. Long messages that said a lot and not very effective. -Contained lies because the army was not as blessed as the newly enlisted soldiers thought. Showed army to be mighty and blessed by God. My favorite poster is the one from Australia which showed how Freedom is in a tug of war with the Oppression. I liked this poster because it was an original way to show how the war was going and in a way it made it seem less dramatic than it really is. I also think that Australians had the most interesting posters in general because their posters were more elaborate and more interesting than the rest of the countries in the war.
